How is the age limit actually counted?
This is where most candidates get it wrong: age is not counted on the day you apply. It is counted on a fixed date named in the advertisement — usually 1 March for MPSC, 1 August for UPSC, and whatever date the notification specifies for other recruitment.
The practical difference is large. If you turn 39 in June, you were still 38 on 1 March — so you are eligible for that year's MPSC cycle. Conversely, once that date has passed, you count as a year older for the next cycle.
Category relaxations
Most recruitment in Maharashtra relaxes the upper limit as follows:
- Backward classes (SC / ST / OBC / SBC / VJNT) — usually 5 years
- Candidates with disabilities — usually 7 to 10 years
- Ex-servicemen — by rule, according to length of service
- Project- and earthquake-affected — per government resolution
The minimum age is the same for every category.
The exams that close early
Not every limit is 38. Some recruitment closes considerably sooner:
- Forest Guard — 25 for the open category
- Maharashtra Police — 28 for the open category
- MPSC Combined, PSI post — 31 for the open category
If you are in your early twenties, these deserve priority. Their window shuts first, while Talathi, Zilla Parishad and MPSC Rajyaseva stay open for years.
What if the limit has passed?
State recruitment closing does not close everything. Central government posts, banking, insurance and public corporations set their own limits, and one-off extensions are announced from time to time. Watching the recruitment notifications is worth the habit.
